Southwest Airlines Resumes Flights After Grounding
Hundreds of Flights Grounded Friday Due to Technical Issue
Major Carriers Report Delays and Cancellations
WEB Hundreds of US flights were grounded Friday morning due to a technical disaster impacting Southwest Airlines. The grounding, which began around 6:30 AM EST, affected flights at airports across the country.
WEB Southwest Airlines is resuming flights after temporarily grounding its entire network Tuesday. The grounding was caused by a technical issue that led to a computer outage and the cancellation of over 2,000 flights.
WEB But in an interview Michael Santoro a Southwest captain and vice president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association said that the problem was much deeper and that the airline's IT system was "completely down." Santoro said that the airline had been experiencing problems with its IT system for weeks and that the grounding was the culmination of those problems.
WEB As the sun rose over the East Coast major carriers including American Airlines Delta Air Lines and United Airlines reported delays and cancellations due to the Southwest grounding. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for the latest flight information.
